The Maybourne Riviera
Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France
Every summer, true to a vow its villagers made at the end of the Middle Ages, Roquebrune performs the Passion in its streets. Rue Moncollet climbs through it in vaulted stairways cut into the rock, beneath the keep. On the Chemin de Menton, an olive tree said to be a thousand years old twists its gnarled trunk. Cap Martin pushes its Aleppo pines and rocks out into the sea, with a path running round them. Le Corbusier had a wooden cabanon there, scarcely larger than a ship's cabin; his tomb, which he designed himself, looks down on the cape from the heights of Roquebrune.
