Athens, Greece
The marble of the Parthenon was cut from Mount Pentelicus, a morning's walk from the Acropolis, and the whole of Attica fits within that distance: a capital and what lies close around it. Mount Hymettus, where the bees make a thyme honey; the plain of Marathon; the coves of Vouliagmeni, where Athenians swim before the office. At the end of the road, Cape Sounion and its temple of Poseidon, raised above a sea of uncompromising blue. Athens, from afar, comes down to a pale rock in the haze; that is how it began.
