Aman Venice
Venice, Italy
In Venice the map is of no use, and the yellow arrows painted on the walls scarcely more. One gets lost, that is understood, and finds the way again by water: a canal, a bridge, a campo where washing dries. Istrian stone keeps the palaces above the lagoon; brick eaten by salt does the rest. Away from St Mark's Square, Cannaregio keeps its courtyards and narrow lanes, Dorsoduro its workshops; the Giudecca, opposite, watches it all from its own bank. In the evening, when the day's boats leave, the city returns to its true size.
