Aman Nai Lert Bangkok
Bangkok, Thailand
At the foot of nearly every building in Bangkok, a spirit house, a small gilded temple raised on a pillar, receives its marigold garlands each morning. The great temples each have their own material: the mother-of-pearl inlaid in the soles of the Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, the Carrara marble that clads the walls of Wat Benchamabophit. Around them, the city stacks up expressways, elevated rail lines and sois, the lanes where life is lived on the doorstep. The late-afternoon storm washes the pavements, and the heat is back before they have dried.
