Set head to tail beneath the crossing of Wells Cathedral, great arches form a pair of scissors: the tower was sinking, and a medieval master mason found this way of holding it back, which holds it still. Somerset builds in Ham Hill stone, a golden limestone that darkens with age; Montacute House raised its gables and tall windows in it. On the Levels, basket willow grows in meadows the winter floods. On Exmoor, the Tarr Steps cross the Barle on long slabs laid flat; when a flood carries them off, they are set back in place.
