The desire to use my fingers for something other than typing on plastic keys! To make something concrete and durable, and useful. When I make something, it gives me a triple satisfaction. Sensory, because using my hands gives me great satisfaction. Intellectual, because I create my knives. Human, because I consider myself as a craftsman trader, in the medieval way, and I am always in contact with my customers.
Harboring a desire to build something that will last forever, often thinking back at the breathtaking swords that he had seen in Lords of the Ring movies, self-proclaimed “old geek” Charles Ballerait would leave behind a 17-year-old career in the audiovisual field to focus on his passion: knifemaking. After his first meeting with Raymond Rosa, an art bladesmith, Charles’s yearning for creation would eventually lead to the opening of his very own shop in Paris. Today, Charles is the owner of Ballerait, Coutelier Artisan at 37 bis, Rue de Montreuil at the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, the cradle of artisanal craftsmanship in Paris.
During this Lartisien Immersion, guests will make The Puck, a unique knife designed by Charles. The small and ergonomic knife, inspired by a Marvel superhero, earned Charles the 1st prize at the “Fabriqué à Paris” label competition in 2018. Participants will work with Charles to assemble and polish the handle, carve their initials on the blade, and operate the equipment used in making the knife. The Puck’s handle is crafted from Delacroix wood, made from Paulownia trees planted outside of Charles’s workshop.
