Ballyfin Demesne

Ballyfin is the sort of house where the past still feels entirely present. Set against the Slieve Bloom Mountains, its two hundred and fifty hectares of parkland come with the privileges of an old Irish estate: long lawns, ancient trees, a grand house and enough room to forget the modern world for a while. The approach says much about the place. Follow the drive through the grounds and the house appears behind its great stone colonnade. Inside, it is less a museum than a house that happens to contain one: old parquet floors, paintings, antique furniture and small curiosities gathered over generations, filling the drawing rooms with a sense of history that never feels contrived. The suites continue in the same spirit. Antique pieces sit alongside rich fabrics and marble bathrooms, while the windows look out across the estate. Beyond the library lies one of Ballyfin’s more unexpected corners: a tall glass-and-steel conservatory, originally designed to shelter the box hedges through the Irish winter, and now an especially fine place to settle down with a book. In the kitchen, Richard Picard-Edwards keeps the estate close to the table, cooking with its vegetables, herbs and poultry. The approach is straightforward and produce-led – and now carries a Michelin star.
