One&Only Gorilla's Nest
The 21 stilted suites seem to hover among the eucalyptus at the edge of Volcanoes National Park, giving the landscape as much space as possible. The hotel is deliberately light on the land, with wooden walkways and footpaths threading through ferns, bamboo and palms rather than cutting across them. Inside, the same connection to Rwanda comes through in the details. Local weaving, basketry and handmade furniture give the public spaces their character, while the suites bring in traditional Imigongo patterns through cushions and rugs, alongside timber and other natural materials. The spa keeps things close to home, too, using ingredients such as coffee and rose in its treatments. Much of the produce served in the restaurants comes from the hotel's own garden, bringing the surrounding landscape to the table in the most satisfying of ways. And the setting makes this a natural base for exploring the region; volcanoes National Park is home to some of Rwanda's mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, with the forest and its inhabitants never far from the lodge.
