Amanyangyun
Shanghai, China
The land around Shanghai is flat, and it is water that draws it. The canals of Zhujiajiao pass beneath humpbacked stone bridges, between black-roofed houses reflected in still water; the gardens of Songjiang line up their pierced rocks and pavilions beside lotus-covered ponds. Offshore, the island of Chongming keeps its paddies and reeds facing the mouth of the Yangtze, where migrating birds pause. The city itself is never far; here, it is content to remain on the horizon.
