Aman le Melezin
Courchevel, France
Courchevel begins among the larches of Le Praz, with its farms and its lake, and climbs in stages to a resort that faces the Saulire head-on. The pistes run right down to the doorsteps, groomed before dawn, and behind the ridge the Three Valleys open onto a domain one never finishes. The wood of the chalets is dark, the snow holds from December to April, and in the afternoon, when the sun passes behind the Vizelle, the light turns blue. In summer the same slopes are covered in gentians and cows, and the silence returns.
