Bürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa
Lucerne, Switzerland
On Lake Lucerne, the paddle steamers still sail, and the canton is read from their decks. The town first, with its covered wooden bridge and its towers, then the shores: Weggis and its chestnut trees, Vitznau at the foot of the Rigi, climbed by rack railway, and Pilatus opposite, often caught in its cloud. The water is green and cold, and the mountains drop straight into it, with no shore to hold them back. In the evening, the light climbs back up the slopes, and the lake, all at once, goes quiet.
