Baur au Lac
Zurich, Switzerland
Zürich is taken for a city of banks; it is first a city of water. The Limmat leaves the lake to run through the old town between narrow façades, cut by bridges where one stops to watch the swans; the lake itself is reached at noon for a swim off a wooden jetty before going back to the office. The cobbles of the Niederdorf, Chagall's windows in the Fraumünster, the blue trams gliding without a sound. The Uetliberg, above, shows the Alps on a clear day. An orderly city, where calm is not an absence but a decision.
