I would love to see a Black vs. Puerto Rican version of West Side Story with fabulous choreography and a soul twist to the arrangement of the music. I could play Maria — my voice range would be perfect, and I'd bring some new and different colors and shades to that role. It would showcase my heritage and Harlem's!
Harlem-born Ahmaya Knoelle Higginson has graced stages from around the world with her multi-octave voice. Passionate about using music as a way of connecting with the youth of Harlem and elevating them, Knoelle has created the Gospel for Teens arts education program and the “Sing Harlem Choir”, a traveling commercial choir. She had worked with several artists that include Madonna, Chance The Rapper, Pharrell and Ariana Grande, she also serves as an arts activist, teaching music to the youth of Harlem, while being passionate about passing on her legacy.
This Immersion is available in two configurations. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, you will be invited to join Knoelle at the Mama Foundation to assist a private singing rehearsal of her Gospel choir for one hour, followed by either lunch or dinner at the iconic Red Rooster Harlem. On Sundays, you will have the chance to join Knoelle at the Abyssinian Baptist Church for Mass, to witness a gospel during their performance. After, you will be invited to a brunch at the Red Rooster and then she will sing with her own choir in front of you.
