Baur au Lac
Zurich, Switzerland
A crescent-shaped lake runs from the city towards the Pre-Alps, and the canton of Zürich lives by it. One swims there from May off wooden jetties, follows it by train, crosses it by boat to lunch on the other shore. The vines of Meilen run down towards the water; opposite, the Au peninsula pushes its castle and its park out into the lake. Inland, the Zürich Oberland lines up its green hills and wide-roofed farms, and Winterthur tends its museums with the reserve of a town that has nothing to prove. On a clear day, the Alps seem within reach of an oar.
