Dubai was built of coral taken from the Gulf and of gypsum long before glass, and the Al Fahidi quarter still has its wind towers, which draw the breeze down into the rooms. That town lives along the Creek. At its mouth, Al Shindagha keeps the house from which the rulers watched over the harbour; at the far end, Ras Al Khor shelters mangroves that the interchanges skirt around. During Ramadan, a cannon shot marks sunset, and the whole city breaks its fast in the same minute.
